Common Reasons For Hair Loss In Males

What causes male hair loss? Up to 50% of males will experience a degree of hair loss by the time they reach their 50s. Vanishing hair can take on different forms, such as shedding, thinning, and bald patches. A steady decline in hair density can vary from person to person; here are several common reasons for male hair loss.

  • Genetics: studies indicate genes account for about 80% of male pattern baldness
  • Hormone imbalance: high levels of the DHT hormone can influence hair loss
  • High stress: significant physical/emotional stress has been linked to hair loss
  • Inadequate diet: deficiencies in nutrients can affect hair health
  • Vitamin deficiency: low levels of certain vitamins can affect hair loss
  • Medication: hair loss can be a rare medication side effect, however a variety of drugs may contribute

What is Male Pattern Baldness?

The number one cause of hair loss is male pattern baldness. Also known as androgenetic alopecia, male pattern baldness is a hereditary condition that can also be influenced by hormone levels and aging. The hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a derivative of testosterone, in high levels can cause this type of hair loss. DHT affects hair follicles by shrinking and shortening the hair, which makes it easier to fall out.

Male pattern baldness often starts around the temples, then continues around the sides and crown of the head; it looks like a ring of hair around the bottom of the scalp with baldness on the crown (e.g., horseshoe-shaped pattern). Most men who experience male pattern hair loss will eventually become bald. People with male pattern baldness often have close relatives with the same type of hair loss.

Am I Balding? Signs and Symptoms of Hair Loss in Males

How do you know if you have male pattern baldness? We recommend you book an Este Medical hair loss assessment, as leaving it untreated may result in further hair loss. Signs and symptoms of hair loss may include:
  • Receding hairline along forehead
  • Thinning hair on top of head
  • Excessive hair loss
  • Scalp becoming more visible
  • Circular patches of hair missing
  • Patches of broken hairs

One thing you can do at home is compare a photo of yourself from last year (e.g., find a clear close-up of your head) to how you look currently. Ask yourself: Is there a noticeable change in the hairline?

It is helpful to remember that a small amount of hair loss is normal, but if you are concerned, or seeing significant hair loss, then you should book a hair loss consultation to determine the type of hair loss you are experiencing and what treatment is most suitable for you.

Can A Hair Loss Treatment Help Me?

When men start to experience hair loss it can be traumatic, having a negative impact on wellbeing and self-esteem. It is completely natural to start googling for ways to prevent going bald and search for hair loss treatments.

Yes, a hair loss treatment most definitely will help you, as advances in hair loss therapy, technology and surgery (i.e., FUE hair transplant) make it feasible to retain the hair you have, regrow it, and replace hair follicles to restore hair growth in problem areas.

Este Medical has several successful hair loss Turkey treatments available. Here are popular and proven hair and scalp treatments for you to consider.

The Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) hair transplant is Este Medical Group’s most popular hair loss treatment with men. In just five months clients experience visible hair growth (i.e., on average 50% hair growth). And within a year most transplant recipients will experience up to 100% hair growth. A FUE hair loss treatment restores hair by replacing old follicles with new follicles that are still able to grow hair. It is an ideal treatment for extreme hair loss.

This regrowth treatment is best for treating a receding hairline, general thinning, and male pattern baldness. Laser therapy stimulates hair follicles and their natural growth cycle. This treatment has a 95% success rate, and you can see results in about four months. This is an excellent treatment to replenish the scalp with new hair growth.

This micro injection treatment targets the mesoderm (below the scalp's surface) to halt hair loss and stimulate hair regrowth. Mesotherapy is a very efficient technique for slowing hair loss and treating alopecia.

On a side note, if you are also experiencing challenges with facial hair growth there is the option to combine your Este Turkey hair transplant or regrowth therapy with a beard transplant or eyebrow transplant.

If your facial hair growth is patchy and sparse, then a Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) hair transplant can help with growing a thicker and more even beard, goatee, mustache, or sideburns.

For the most successful results we recommend you have a hair loss specialist consultation to discuss your treatment expectations, as well as your hairstyle and grooming goals.

Receding Hairline

receding hairline treatment UK
One of the most pervasive patterns of hair loss is a receding hairline. Unfortunately it is one of the first signs of male pattern baldness. A receding pattern of hair loss usually starts at either side of the forehead, creating a distinct M-shape in the hairline. As this pattern progresses, hair on the top or back of the head usually begins to fall out.

General Thinning

Thinning hair treatments
Hair thinning is hair loss spread evenly over the top of your scalp. Common with aging, the thinning often begins at the hairline along the forehead.

Thinning Crown

Male hair loss treatment
The crown is the highest point on your scalp, toward the back of your head; another place where males can experience hair thinning. When hair thins over the crown, the scalp becomes visible, and eventually a bald patch may appear. Crown thinning may happen in conjunction with a receding hairline, but most males will experience one or the other.

Alopecia

alopecia treatment
Alopecia areata is immunesystem related and causes patchy hair loss. This condition causescells in your immune system to surround and attack your hairfollicles. Hair growth treatments are available to help with thistype of hair loss.

Severe Stress (Telogen Effluvium)

severe hair loss
Hair loss can result from extreme stress and shock, this is known as telogen effluvium. Stress-related hair loss usually starts about three months after a traumatic experience. Signs to look for include: increased hair shedding, thinning hair, and patches of missing hair.
